Arthritis Care prides itself on its professionalism. Proof of this is found in the excellent feedback and clinical evidence we are accumulating, and in the fact that our courses are developed and managed using the Ss2Q quality framework and audit tool throughout the UK.

What on earth is Ss2Q?

It stands for Stepping Stones to Quality. In short, it’s a rigorous quality assurance process. NHS England and the voluntary sector spent 10 years creating Ss2Q, a systematic approach to developing and implementing lay-led self-management programmes (courses and workshops). Arthritis Care played a major role in this.

The purpose of the framework is to assure participants that they are involved in programmes built upon collective good practice and experience. It also means that we are continually developing and improving our courses.

What does it involve for Arthritis Care?

Arthritis Care’s training programme is built on years of experience and over time has developed strong processes and protocols to manage and support delivery. This has included:

  • managing the recruitment of volunteers and their on-going training and support
  • marketing processes to fill course places
  • data protection for people participating in the programme
  • monitoring and evaluation processes processes to review and update materials.

Staff and volunteers involved in courses are able to continue their own professional development. They can choose to work to become:

  • self-management training assessors (who regularly assess the course delivery)
  • Master trainers (who train up our new volunteers to enable them to deliver courses)
  • T-trainers (the highest level of the Stanford programme and are trained by Stanford themselves. These members of staff are able to train and assess Master trainers)

Arthritis Care is proud to have seven Master trainers.

Every volunteer and staff member carries a Passport to Practice. This document endorses all their training and is a record of their course delivery history.

What about external review?

The quality institue for self management education and training (QISMET) was established to ensure self-management training is delivered to the highest quality standard. QISMET has recently conducted a pilot in the West Midlands to launch a Quality Mark accreditation scheme. Arthritis Care Central England is proud to have taken part in the pilot and was successfully awarded the Quality Kite mark. Following this pilot Arthritis Care will now be pursuing the award for the rest of the organisation.
