A number of specialist providers can help disabled people to enter the workplace, remain in employment or return to work. You can help your patients by signposting to some of these resources.
Jobcentre Plus (JobCentres/Jobs and Benefits Offices in Northern Ireland) have details of thousands of job vacancies, both online and in their offices. Their offices are accessible to people with mobility problems, and additional support is available for disabled people. Visit www.direct.gov.uk or www.nidirect.gov.uk in Northern Ireland.
Disability employment advisers (employment service advisers in Northern Ireland) can help people to assess their skills and identify training and employment opportunities. These advisers can assist with job applications, discussions with potential employers and can refer people to work-related schemes and benefits.
The Access to Work scheme operated by Jobcentre or equivalent aims to help disabled people entering or in employment to arrange suitable workplace adjustments. These might include support workers, adaptations to premises or equipment or help with work-related travel costs for people unable to drive or use public transport. In most cases employers (or self-employed people) pay for adjustments and recoup their costs.
