Inactivity decreases joint motion and flexibility, which in itself leads to weak muscles, and naturally with the current spell of cold, icy weather people with mobility problems will be worried about venturing outside.
If you are unable to go for a walk or feel the weather is ‘getting you down’ why not do some low impact exercise around the home, as long as your GP has told you it’s alright to exercise.
You can even do an aerobic workout in your chair! So when the better weather comes round you will feel stronger and less fatigued to enjoy walking in the fresh air again!
You can learn more about exercise and other techniques to decrease pain and increase mobility by attending Arthritis Care’s self-management course.
‘Thanks for the help I have received from your course recently in Norwich. I now find I am able to control the pain in my knees and feet through breathing, exercise and diet, to a greater extent than before. I have increased the amount of walking I do on most days and am thereby able to help control my weight as well. I do hope these classes can continue in our locality as I know of other people who would benefit from them and would certainly recommend them to attend’
Julie Hibbs, Volunteer Services Supervisor in the West Midlands, reports:
"I recently had the pleasure of being invited to Druids Heath Golf Club by Bill Snowden to receive a cheque in the amount of £1000 which had been raised for us over a period of time. We were fortunate enough to be nominated as this year's recipent of the Golf Club's charity event monies.
I had a marvellous eveing and was extremely well looked after by Bill and met lots of other members of the Club including The President and The Ladies Captain.
The club raised monies for two other charities as well as ourselves and clearly do an enormous amount of good work.
It just remains for me to say a very big 'Thank You' to Bill and the club for their hospitality and generosity."
The South Forest Self-help group in North Nottinghamshire organises regular rambles in the area.
Wednesday, 24 November is the date for the next ramble. Route to be planned - watch this space. If you have any suggestions for these, please let us know.
